Early Morning Portrait Session at the Tidal Basin in Washington DC

A few weeks ago the big day finally came for Grace & Matt’s wedding at the Naval Academy. We’re still working on those photos, but you can already see some previews on Facebook! A few months before that though, we met up at the Tidal Basin in Washington DC for a much anticipated Engagement Session. After working hard to find a timeframe that would work with everyone’s schedule, we settled on the dewey hours of a Friday morning. Rather than staying right there at the Basin, we made a big loop from Raoul Wallenberg Pl, up through 13th street past the Washington Monument, and then over to the Reflecting Pool for some shots in front of the Lincoln Memorial before walking back to the Tidal Basin along Independence Ave.

We had one somewhat unusual challenge with this shoot. See, back in 2014, we photographed Matt’s brother’s wedding, and we held their engagement session at the Tidal Basin as well! Where a lazy photographer might be tempted to reuse an arrangement they created before for a new client, I really didn’t want to do that this time. I was imagining the picture frames in Matt’s parent’s home and how redundant they would have looked! Avoiding any repeats meant a lot of walking, but it was worth it.

Check out some of the highlights below, and keep an eye out for some images from the wedding. They’re coming along beautifully!
