About  Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry, located in the charming city of Baltimore, Maryland, is a unique and inspiring location for portrait photography. With a rich history dating back to the late 1700s, this pentagonal bastion fort has played a significant role in American military history.

Fort McHenry’s history is filled with memorable moments that make it a fascinating backdrop for portrait photography. It was originally built in 1798 and served as a fortification for the U.S. military through World War I. The fort’s most significant moment came during the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy. The sight of the American flag flying over the fort inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the U.S. national anthem.

Today, Fort McHenry is a popular tourist destination and a national monument and historic shrine. The fort’s architecture is beautiful and provides a variety of interesting settings for portraits. The fort’s location on the waterfront offers stunning views of the city and harbor, making it an ideal location for portrait photography. The grounds are well-maintained and provide plenty of space for portraits of all sizes.

However, there are challenges when using Fort McHenry as a portrait photography location. The fort can be crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, which can make it difficult to find a quiet spot to take portraits. As a historic site, there are some rules as well, for example climbing on walls or cannons is not allowed, which can limit your options for poses and backgrounds.

The fort’s location on the waterfront can also make it hot and humid in the summer and cold and windy in the winter. And, bugs can be a nuisance, so it’s important to bring bug spray.
