A permit for commercial photography is strictly required. Obtaining the permit is easy and completed entirely online. Once obtained the permit is good for one year. Be aware that the gazebo which is popular for portraits is a specific rental area. Although if it is not currently reserved, you may use the space in a way that does not impede other guest’s enjoyment of the park, you should be aware that this area may be restricted.

Updated September 2024

Green Spring Gardens has changed their reservation policy. In addition to a $25 permit which entitles a specific photographer to make reservations, a reservation fee of $30 to $120, depending on the size of the party, will be required to hold a session at the gardens. You can learn more about the specifics of these new rules here. For typical portrait session scenarios, these fees are reasonable relative to similar fees charged at other public locations.

About  Green Spring Gardens

Green Springs Garden Park, located near Alexandria, Virginia, is a place with much history and natural beauty, making it an ideal spot for portrait and small event photography. The park’s roots trace back to the 18th century, with its centerpiece being the historic “Green Spring” plantation house. This house, built between 1777 and 1784, has seen the transformation of the estate from a private residence to a public park, a change initiated by Michael Whitney Straight and his wife Belinda Straight in 1970. The landscape, redesigned in the Colonial Revival style by Beatrix Farrand and Walter Macomber in 1942, adds to the park’s historical significance.

Today, Green Spring Gardens stretches across 31 acres and is managed by the Fairfax County Park Authority. It boasts a variety of attractions that are great for photography. Among many other features, the park includes estate gardens popular with wedding photographers, a tropical greenhouse, and a wooded stream valley complete with ponds and a gazebo. The naturalistic native plant garden and over 20 demonstration gardens showcase an array of landscaping and gardening techniques, providing diverse backdrops for all sorts of different portraits.

The park offers numerous benefits for portrait photography. The beautiful vistas range from elegant estate gardens to serene wooded areas, providing a multitude of scenic backdrops. The expertly maintained flower beds are full of vibrant colors, while the various garden structures add unique architectural elements to photographs. The aesthetic variety within the park caters to different styles and themes, ensuring that photographers can find the perfect spot for just about any shoot. Various parts of the park are also in bloom most of the year, offering picturesque settings almost year-round. Additionally, the large open lawns and cozy water features provide versatile spaces for both group shots and intimate portraits.

However, there are some limitations to consider when planning a photography session at Green Springs Garden Park, namely the park’s extensive size. Despite the presence of many paved walkways and the variety of settings, the scale of Green Spring Garden can pose concerns for people with mobility challenges. For those who have difficulty traversing large spaces, automated mobility assistance, such as an electric wheel chair, is strongly recommended.
